Consideration of submarine landslide induced by 2018 Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami within Palu Bay

چکیده
On September 28 2018, an Mw 7.5 strike-slip earthquake occurred to the north of Palu Bay on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. This triggered a destructive tsunami within bay, which reached city. Simulation have been conducted investigate landslide source. However, should be investigated considering physical model in area where detailed bathymetric survey had not conducted. In this study, we impact coastal landslides southern part bay using two-layer model. Owing increasing collapse volume, west could approximately explain observations calculated mass volume source largely overestimated data. Hence, considered possibility submarine and simulation results maximum heights bay. These suggest that more multibeam data will required possible induce reaching city few minutes after collapse.

Tsunami modeling of a submarine landslide in the Fram Strait
[1] The present geological setting west of Svalbard closely parallels the situation off mid-Norway after the last glaciation, when crustal unloading by melting of ice induced very large earthquakes. Today, on the modern Svalbard margin, increasing bottom water temperatures are destabilizing marine gas hydrates, which are held in continental margin sediments consisting of interlayered contourite...
متن کاملThe Makassar Strait Tsunamigenic Region, Indonesia
The Makassar Strait region has had the highest frequency of historical tsunami events for Indonesia. The strait has a seismic activity due to the convergence of four tectonic plates that produces a complex mixture of structures. The main tsunamigenic features in the Makassar Strait are the Palu-Koro and Pasternoster transform fault zones, which form the boundaries of the Makassar trough. Analys...
متن کاملTsunami Generation by Submarine Mass Failure
Numerical experiments are conducted for two-dimensional model problems of tsunami generation by underwater slides and slumps. These problems consist of a semi-ellipse, translating down an incline with a prescribed center of mass motion. For each problem, this motion is derived as a function of geometric and material parameters, and we calculate corresponding characteristic tsunami amplitudes. L...
متن کاملTectonic pumping: earthquake-induced chemical flux detected in situ by a submarine cable experiment in Sagami Bay, Japan
We successfully deployed an in situ automatic chemical analyzer sensitive to manganese (Mn) in seawater for a period of 81 days for the first time on the deep seafloor of Sagami Bay along a convergent plate boundary south of Japan. The in situ Mn analyzer (GAMOS-IV) was connected to a submarine cable as a means to supply power and to relay real time data. During the observation period from Apri...
متن کاملSubmarine landslide triggered by volcanic eruption recorded by in situ
NW Rota-1 is a submarine volcano in the Mariana volcanic arc that is notable as the site where underwater explosive eruptions were fi rst witnessed in A.D. 2004. After years of continuous low-level eruptive activity, a major landslide occurred at NW Rota-1 in August 2009, triggered by an unusually large eruption that produced 10 times the acoustic energy of the background level of activity. An ...
